How Community Gardens Are Transforming Rural Rwanda

Community gardens have become a beacon of hope for many families in rural Rwanda. At Zion Foundation Rwanda, we have established over 30 community gardens across 5 districts, each serving as both a food source and a learning center for sustainable agriculture.\n\nThese gardens provide families with nutritious vegetables, fruits, and herbs throughout the year. But more than that, they serve as training grounds where community members learn modern farming techniques, including composting, crop rotation, and organic pest management.\n\nOur approach is simple but effective: we provide the initial seeds, tools, and training, and the community takes ownership of the garden. Each garden is managed by a committee of local volunteers who ensure fair distribution of the harvest and ongoing maintenance.\n\nThe impact has been remarkable. Families report that their food expenses have decreased by up to 40%, and the variety of their diet has significantly improved. Children are healthier, and parents have more resources to invest in education and other essential needs.\n\nWe are now expanding this program to 3 additional districts, with the goal of establishing 50 community gardens by 2025.
